20230227 Maritime Museum

I had a good time exploring the Maritime Museum on my own this morning. It covers early Māori watercraft up to modern yachting.

After lunch I joined the new group for a guided tour of the War Memorial Museum.

The hull of this canoe was adzed from a single tōtara log (82’ long). The top part is intricately carved and attached with rope – no nails were used anywhere. It was built around 1836 and carried up to 100 warriors.

Then we went up Maungawhau (Mt Eden) to enjoy the view.

I’m hoping this is not a count of kiwis killed by our bus.
